The Process

Before beginning any drill motion, be sure you are set up properly. As you now know, good alignment and address are prerequisites for a good swing motion. By the time you practice your swing, you should have developed these setup skills (through the same kind of deliberate, conscientious practice procedures).

Some of these drills can be practiced anywhere. Some can be practiced without a club, some with a club but no ball. You will be surprised by the results of this “dummy” practice. However, for your time at the range we recommend practicing in the following manner.

Before we begin to analyze your swing motion, we need to agree on the method for making repairs. You must trust our years of experience in golf instruction and follow the plan as prescribed. Also, practice means just that, practice. NEVER PRACTICE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO SCORE ON THE GOLF COURSE! Let the practice and drill work merge into your golf game naturally.

First, isolate the problem motion or position. Assign a repetition drill or “antidote” motion that will replace the current swing fault. This can only take place through careful, thoughtful and disciplined repetition of the assigned drill. Doing the drills without hitting a golf ball can be preferable.

Range Practice

At the range, begin each drill with a “ghost” motion. This is a slow, deliberate run-through of the motion you intend to develop. It is a dry run. You should perform the ghost motion three times before hitting a ball.

Next, practice the drill itself using a ball. Then incorporate the drill into a full swing motion as you hit the ball.

After hitting a ball, DO NOT immediately reach for another golf ball. Instead, take inventory of your swing motion. First observe the flight of the ball. Watch it all the way to the ground. As you are doing this, analyze your finishing position. Did you finish in balance? Do you have good posture? Is all your weight resting comfortably on your front foot? Is your chest facing the target? Is your grip in the same position as when you started the swing?

This self-critique is vital. The information you gain makes all the difference in the world. If you don’t ask these questions, you will soon be practicing without focus. Repeating the drill improperly, without awareness, will do more harm than good.

Don’t be embarrassed to practice this way at the range. What you are doing is far more effective than unconsciously banging away at range balls as most players do. We call those guys “basket-cases,” because they are constantly dragging from the basket another ball with which to bury their swing potential. Perhaps, one day, everyone will have
enough understanding to practice properly. Until then, be willing to be a maverick.

Once again, the range practice method is as follows:

(1) Check your setup position before beginning the drill. Pound the importance of good preparation into your head every chance you get.

(2) Perform the drill three times without using a ball. Visualize the motion and absorb the physical sensation of doing it properly.

(3) Perform the drill with a ball. This means you will execute only the drill, not a completed swing motion. DO NOT worry about ball flight. Most people try so hard to hit the ball far, they lose sight of the drill on which they are working.

(4) Hit with a full swing. Incorporate the motion practiced in the drill into your full swing motion. Concentrate. When you finish, take the time to evaluate your motion. A proper finishing position is just as important as a proper address. The address is a forecast of what will happen — the finish is a summary of what happened. The finish is a history lesson. It is a lesson you must learn if you are to improve.

This practice procedure may sound laborious. It does take a little work to hold your focus. However, we promise you will find the whole thing much more enjoyable and rewarding than the old “grip and go.” A “mindless” attitude can help on the golf course, not on the practice range.

Hours of practice will only overwhelm a child, so just allow him or her to practice a little bit at first, say 30 minutes. This will keep motivation for practice high.

You will need a partner to practice on

To understand this concept you will need a partner to practice on as you follow these instructions.

1. Face a partner. Have your partner raise one arm straight out from the side of his body with thumb pointing down.

2. Place one hand on your partner’s extended arm, above the wrist and the other on their opposite shoulder.

3. Instruct your partner to resist as you push down, firmly and steadily, on his extended arm for several seconds. Your partner’s arm should not move down more than a couple of inches.

4. While your partner keeps his arm extended, have him close his eyes and think of a negative golf experience. When he has it focused, press down on his arm. His arm will come down easily.

5. Now ask your partner to think of a very positive golf experience. Once he has it in focus, press down again. His arm will stay level and strong.

6. Have your partner check you.

The muscle checking is real and repeatable. It is indicating the response of your partner’s unconscious mind to negative and positive golf experiences. The results have nothing to do with muscular strength; rather, you are accessing a neurological phenomenon. Lose a few balls? Break a club? Run out of tees? No problem. There is more than an ample supply of quaint little golf shoppes and massive bargain golf stores up and down the Grand Strand.

Three things you need to consider when taking advantage of these great golf bargains this time of year, and we have experienced all of them at one time or another. First, is the heat an humidity. Although it is typically not bad in the morning rounds, we experienced a few afternoon rounds which were quite uncomfortable. Second, it is hurricane season. In the past 10 years we were only pulled off a course once to evacuate. However, most courses were open the next day. Third, the “Dupont Amateur”, one of the largest amateur golf tournaments in the world. There are still more than enough courses, but you may have to avoid a few. The schedule of courses used for this tournament is listed daily in the local paper, (We simply plan our trip one week earlier. Although it really isn’t necessary, we are just anxious to get there and “tee it up”.)

Myrtle Beach in late August is a truly great golf bargain. A large quantity of quality courses to suit every golfers game and budget. We’ll be there!

If nature is close to your heart, then this next destination I am going to introduce you is a must visit, Danum Valley. Danum Valley is nestled deep in the rain forest of Borneo where nature is at its most pristine. As you travel deeper and deeper into the jungle, you will suddenly come across a magical paradise of the Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL), erected overlooking the magnificent setting of the Segama River and flanked by tall hill ranges. BRL is an impressive resort, designed by naturalists and built on stilts using traditional timber materials, and has the comfort of a 3-Star Hotel. When you think you have enough of sightseeing and you want to take a day’s break idling around to charge your energy, then I suggest you take a 30-minute boat trip to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Public Golf Courses ? Making The Right Choice

Chances are, if you’re just starting out, you haven’t decided to apply to a fancy country club yet so you can play their outstanding course, right? That’s a very good idea, because there are probably several public golf courses close to you that are just as terrific and much cheaper too! Do you think Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson started out on private courses? I doubt it! Even though we can’t all have the status of a Woods or Mickelson, we can make sure that we don’t have an argument with our wallet every time we want to hit the course for some practice time on the driving range or to get in a leisurely round.

Of course, the first thing you want to check at a public golf course is the course itself. Find out how many holes it has – some courses only have 9 and, to play a full 18 holes of golf, you just go around twice. Walk a few holes and take a look at the course. Check to see whether it appears well maintained. Are the greens plush and even? Is the rough bearable? Does it look like they regularly mend divot holes? There’s nothing more discouraging for a novice golfer than playing a course that ends up being too tough just because of poor maintenance. While poorly maintained courses can provide lots of entertainment value – you know you look funny when you’re swinging away in a bunker – they don’t provide as much “good” experience for a novice golfer as a well cared for course will.

That brings up another thing to check, the cost of a round. You’ll find some big differences in cost from course to course, and many public golf courses offer reduced rates at certain times of the day and during the off-season. For example, public golf courses in Phoenix, Arizona, known as the City of Golf, sometimes discount their rates by as much as 50 percent during the hot summer months.

Next, some extras can be really helpful to your game! Most beginners spend far too much time on the practice putting green and not nearly enough time on the driving range. Make sure the course you pick has an adequate driving range. It doesn’t matter if you can putt like a pro if it takes you six strokes to get onto the green at a par 3 hole. Along with the driving range and practice green, you might find a public golf course that has a chipping green or a practice bunker. These can all be great features to help you improve particular problem areas in your game. And that’s what it’s all about.

Finally, check out the clubhouse. No, I don’t mean discover whether the bartender is handsome or the waitress is cute. Learn whether the course has a pro shop, and whether a golf pro runs it. Ask about his or her qualifications – most of us think of the words “golf pro” and immediately think PGA, but not all golf pros are registered with the PGA. For that matter, not all golf pros are particularly well qualified for teaching. Ask if lessons are offered or if a golf school is associated with the course. This can be a big selling point if you’re trying to improve your golf swing and just can’t figure out what’s wrong. And of course, find out the cost of the lessons.

The secret to finding a good public golf course is to shop around. Check out several courses in your area and don’t worry about whether they are listed in some Who’s Who of public courses. Just do your homework and pick the one that best suits your own needs. It will make for a much more enjoyable experience and might even lower your score!

And remember – a bad choice can get you the same results as Hank Aaron, the world-renowned baseball player who once said, “It took me 17 years to get 3,000 hits, but I did it in one afternoon on the golf course!”
